Theme: Jesus is Wisdom

In the assembly of the Most High she opens her mouth,
and in the presence of his hosts she tells of her glory…

She reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other,
and she orders all things well.

Tonight is the night we begin the O Antiphons. Most of us know them through the Christmas hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” Each night focuses on a part of the Old Testament descriptions of the Messiah, and these chants were used very early on in the Church, and were in common use by the 8th Century. In the first of the Antiphons, we sing of Jesus, Who is Wisdom.

When Solomon prayed for wisdom, he was praying to be closer to God. He wanted to be able to think more like the Lord. When we draw near to Jesus, we are drawing near to Wisdom. When we desire to be closer to God, we are seeking His wisdom.

O Wisdom of our God Most High,
guiding creation with power and love:
come to teach us the path of knowledge!
